The 15 Day Disneyland Challenge: Day 6

Note: This post is part of a 15 Day challenge with questions referring to Disneyland or Walt Disney World. For more information, or to see all 15 questions, please refer to the introductory post, The 15 Day Disneyland Challenge. As stated in that post, I am not the creator of the challenge – just a willing participant!

Day 6: Your Favorite Parade

I’ll be honest. I’ve never been a huge fan of parades. Sure, they’re fun and have great music a lot of the time; they’re also a great way to see characters you may not be able to meet elsewhere in the park. However, to me, waiting for and watching parades are taking up valuable time that can be spent elsewhere – like a less congested Fantasyland or Tomorrowland. There are rides to ride, people!

That being said, I do have a fondness for some parades. Of course, I’m a fan of the Main Street Electrical Parade (later to be titled Disney’s Electrical Parade, but let’s face it – Main Street, USA is its rightful home and always will be!), with its sparkling lights and electro-synthemagnetic musical sounds – it’s a classic, and a pretty one at that! I still remember being able to watch parts of it from overhead on the Skyway, but that’s a post for a different day. The latest offering, Soundsational is pretty fun, too. It embraces the idea of a parade over show stops, with great music and fun interactions. One of my daughter’s favorite activities is riding on my shoulders after the parade is over and following the last float down Main Street. What daddy couldn’t appreciate that?

There is, however, one parade, that seems to catch my attention more than others: A Christmas Fantasy Parade.

And the soldiers actually play their trumpets!

I think perhaps it’s just because I am an absolute nut when it comes to Christmas. The entire season is magical for me – throw in Disneyland and I’m just plain enchanted. The parade itself, with the oft repeating music, marching soldiers, dancing snowmen, ice skating Mickey and Minnie, Santa and so much more, is a spectacle to behold. Add in the factor that this is an annual occurrence; it gives me time to miss it and discover it new the following year! Now that I’m a parent, it’s even more fun to enjoy with my little girl; to keep our eyes out for whoever may be coming up next to spread the Christmas cheer!

“Have a Tiggery Christmas and a Poohriffic New Year!”

I will admit, there is one part of the parade I’m okay with missing: the reindeer. Yes, they’re cute and entertaining, but when you’ve seen this after working at the Disney Store for countless Christmases, you tend to be a little concerned:

*SHUDDER* I guess there’s one part of Christmas and Disney that just doesn’t do it for me.

Alright, dear readers, now it’s your turn. Do you have a favorite parade? If so, feel free to share below!

*Quick note – I’ll be taking tomorrow, July 4th off from the Disneyland Challenge, but be sure to check in for a few Independence Day themed video links!

  1. Christmas parade was my pick also. I love that the herald trumpeters actually play them accompanied by the parade track. Being a trumpet player myself, I love that. Herald trumpets are awesome. I had the thrill of playing one in one of our church Easter plays. It was so cool. Can’t wait to see the Christmas parade this year.

  2. I’m going to have to go with the Electrical Parade as well. The only times I’ve seen it in person have been in California Adventure, but it is such a Disney institution and does deserve to be back on Main St. It’s beautiful and wonderous and whimsical, which is everything it should be.

  3. My favorite was The Parade of Dreams (50th Anniversary) although Soundsational is catching up. Do love the Herald Trumpets from the Christmas parade, but the rest of it bores me. Least favorite was Celebrate, but there’s no bad entertainment at Disneyland.

  4. I am a Main Street Electrical Parade girl all the way. I remember being a kid and sitting on the curb waiting. More specifically, my dad did most of the sitting while my mom, sister, and I looked in the shops to break up the time. It was always worth the wait, and we even made friends with the people around us. One year we were talking to people from England, and even now 20 years later we often repeat some of their sayings that we thought were so cool. I am more of a parade person and enjoy all the parades mentioned, but I do appreciate the days when we miss the parade and have sections of the park almost to ourselves.

  5. And by the way, now I am singing Hip Hop Noel, and I didn’t even watch the video. Sigh…. Always the “highlight” of the Disney Store Christmas loop.

  6. I was never a fan of parades, to the point that there are parades that ran while I was little when I would frequent Disneyland that I literally have not seen a single second of. I just never cared. I would rather be on the less crowded rides at that time, and would plan my day to avoid the parade route. And I still have that attitude about many parades. But I love love love Soundsational and can’t get enough of it. The details are just amazing. I could go on and on about why I love that parade. The Christmas parade is good enough for me to watch once or twice, and the electrical parade has it’s charm, but I never want to stake out a spot and wait for them. If I happen to find a spot as they’re starting, I’ll watch. Otherwise, you can find me in New Orleans, on the opposite side of the park.

  7. Electrical Light Parade. I dream of the day it comes back (hopefully to Disneyland) so my little boys can see it. They will be in awe, just as I was as a kid. The music makes me giddy. I just LOVE it. Brings back wonderful memories as a kid.

The Christmas parade is a very close 2nd. Even though it feels like it’s been the same for years and years, I still enjoy it. I especially like pointed out all the characters to my boys and watching them wave and jump up and down to their favorites (I guess characters at a far are ok with my boys, but up close they do not enjoy). Especially Santa. Who doesn’t love Santa!

  8. No thought in this one at all; Main Street Electrical Parade. It is where my love for Disneyland started, it’s the first time I found myself obsessed with a soundtrack and lead to countless creative days as well as leading me to be a composer as I tried to figure out how they put all of the known Disney songs over the Baroque Hoedown bed (which is why I love counterpoint so much to this day in my composing). I PRAY they bring it back to Disneyland as they have hinted so I can experience it with my girls in the coming years!!

  9. Main Street Electrical Parade is my absolute favorite!!! It’s just so distinctive. It makes me a little crazy that the last time I saw it was at DCA and was the Electrical Parade. One day it will come home even if for a little while! Oh and do love the Christmas Fantasy Parade. I’m a big fan of Christmas to Craig and this parade is just so great!
